So here is your update to the series.

First thing I did a couple of weeks ago is I put the site together. Not just a bunch of random pages like it was before, but now the site is hooked up and working. The first page you hit is the squeeze page.  We used aweber for the autoresponder.  After they sign up for aweber they get pushed off to a secret tip.  This secret tip should be good enough to keep them coming back for more. At the bottom of the secret tip they are presented with a link to the sales letter.

For this product we used paypal as the payment gateway.  If you don’t know how to set that up you can ask in the members forum.  I’ll be more than happy to jump in there and help you out. Anyways, after they purchase the product paypal will push them off to a thank you page.  This thank you page should only have a little thank you message and another autoresponder form.  This form will be for a different mailing list.  Not the original list we had people sign up to before.  This is how we separate our buyers from the rest of the group. Once they sign up they get pushed on to a page so that they can download their product.

The URL for the thank you page and the download page should be some weird combination of numbers and letters.  For example your thank you page could be www.domain.com/thankyoualakajlewjc9393aj9309cj409jcojrrlkcjsli4jje.html . This will keep people from guessing the link.

Then you can use a robot.txt file to block the thank you page and the download page from being indexed into the search engines.  Here is the code for blocking pages from the search engines.

User-agent: *
Disallow: /thankyoupage.html
Disallow: /downloadpage.html
Disallow: /orthewholefolder/

Ok if you didn’t understand that User-agent: * means every search engine spider/bot. Then you are telling them to not have access to specific pages or folders… It’s really easy. Just upload that into a regular .txt file, name it robot.txt and then upload it into the root of your website.

Okay once the site was all set up I sat down for a couple of hours and I showed the two guys how to do some basic FREE marketing.  We went over yahoo answers, blog marketing, forum marketing, and youtube video ripping.

You can see we have begun to gather visitors to the site. Here are our results for optins from aweber.

So, we’ve begun to get some results.  I’m sure some of those optins come from readers here.  I promise… there isn’t any reason for you to sign up so please don’t if you don’t have to we would like to try and keep these numbers as close to accurate as possible.

We have yet to make a sale, but we are in there working hard to drive traffic to the site. Once we get some more data I will begin to tweak the site to make it convert better.  I’ll also be installing a click map over the site.  This will help me determine what actions I need to take.

The Series
We’re still developing the website. It’s going slower than I had hoped. It’s hard working online when you don’t have the time because your family, work, and other obligations that you may have. The two guys that are working on the site have decided to devote a couple of hours each night to completing the website. This of course is a little difficult because they are still learning basic HTML.

I’ve also found it difficult to teach things like good sales letters, persuasive headlines, and the basics of how a site should look.  These are things that come with time and experience.  So I set them off to look at several different website examples.  You should look at how other marketers are creating their websites.  Chances are you will begin to notice commonalities. Some things can’t be taught but are learned more by experience.  I say get out there and put your mind to work on creating your website.

The Other Things
So… while I was trying to work with these two entrepreneurs this week I got the thought of just purchasing the website.  I’m not talking a PLR website but one that has already been created and is beginning to generate an income.  These are available and they are abundant.  But you HAVE to know where to look and what to look for.

One great website to look at is Flippa.com. They are, in a sense, the ebay of websites and domains. While I was browsing Flippa I decided to take a look at their blog.  I ran across an article by my good friend… Ryan Moran.  Come to find out Ryan is an exclusive content provider for Flippa.  Which means he is basically the authority on buying and selling websites online.

I’m trying to co-ordinate with Ryan right now to do a webinar on buying and selling websites online.  This will be an amazing opportunity for anyone that wants to skip some steps in website creation.

Ryan also has a model for buying websites online and selling them offline for 2 years of their total value.  Maybe, if I can get him to do a webinar for us, he will give us some tips for selling sites offline.

If you go to http://www.bestgolfswingsecret.com the main page you first hit will be full of links that you can use to navigate your way around the site as it’s being built.  We will be rotating between two different squeeze pages to find out which converts the best.  After they hit the squeeze they will be taken to a page with the answer (something short yet powerful) and then off to the actual sales letter.

The key to the first page is to entice an individual to sign up to your mailing list.  I’m not going to claim to you that I am some squeeze page guru…  Trust me I’m not.  I like to stick with what works and fortunately for us Perry Belcher and Ryan Deiss have tested plenty of squeeze pages for us.  During this case study I will be using one of their squeeze page as my base for a split test. You can check it out by clicking here.

There are several basic elements that have been tried and tested to help boost your squeeze page conversion rates.  Here are a list that I know for a fact work… These have been proven time and time again by marketers and have proven to help your conversion rates.

• Make sure your content is readable.  This includes font styles, size, and color.  This data has already been gathered for you by many different sources and marketers.  Don’t try and re-invent the wheel here by creating fancy fonts at different sizes.  Stick with black size 12 Arial as your default font.  Arial is an easy to read especially when you set the color to contrast the background.
• Make your headline stick out.  A few years back John Reese told the world that they should use red Tahoma font in their headers.  Michel Fortin of MichelFortin.com reiterated the use of red Tahoma back in 2006. Read that article to get some more insight on headlines and their ability to help convert readers.  Keep the header font size between 22-28 (That’s my opinion). It works and it converts.
• Choose a color that is going to relax the reader.  Light colors tend to work best.  When I create my pages I choose a light blue or light grey color for the background.  Check out what what thinkquest.org says about colors. When you have a sales letter or really anything you want people to read your best bet it so give them colors that will keep them relaxed.  If people are relaxed while they are reading your content they will take action. After you read that thinkquest.org article take a look at what main colors trusted companies use. You’ll see lots of blue. Figure out how you can get trusted colors onto your pages.
• Use arrows.  Lots of arrows.  Okay… Don’t go overboard or anything but place arrows in places where you want people to look.  The eye follows the arrow.  Even arrows that are integrated into the design.  99% of the time your eye will follow the direction that an arrow is taking you.  When you load up the squeeze page on bestgolfswingsecrets.com where does your eye look? Chances are your eyes will hit the headline and then jump right over to the arrows.  Don’t be afraid to guide people where you want them with arrows.
• Speaking of guiding people.  Make sure you strip your site of useless links. Don’t include navigation or links to other websites.  If people leave they might never come back. If you must include navigation on your sales letter place it at the bottom.  This of course is very different for actual online stores where you want people to look around.  With this method of advertising we want people to only go where we tell them to go. Keep your useless unproductive links out of sight.
• Use images to help convey the message of what they will be receiving.  Images are powerful. They say an image is worth 1000 word. You can absolutely use images on your squeeze page to help fill the gaps.  Remember, this is a squeeze page we are creating.  We don’t want to overwhelm them with words.  We want to get our point across as quickly as possible so that they join our list.  Images should convey a message.
• Use bullet points to address what is going to be taught or given to the individual. What are they getting by joining your list? 5 bullets are plenty to get your point across.  You  don’t want to overwhelm them right now with reading… Once again, the point of the squeeze page is to grab their email.

The Affiliate Summit conferences in general are very good.  I enjoy them and I will continue to attend them.  BUT… I honestly do not like going to the main event.  The summit is way too crowded.  It’s hard to walk around the meet market. I walked in… Tried to get to the back of the room… Got half way and turned around.  It wouldn’t be so bad if the tables were just a little bit farther apart.  The problem arises when you have 10 affiliates (for example) trying to stand in front of one table. You can imagine the congestion that arises. I think the problem with the meet market could have been alleviated if there were multiple entrances to the event.  I think affiliates need to also realize that the meet market is where you go to meet new contacts that you can go back to during the actual event. It’s called a MEET MARKET.  Not a STOP AND DO BUSINESS RIGHT THEN AND THERE MARKET.  Okay… So I might be blowing this out of proportion.  But seriously the meet market is way crowded and way hot on the inside.

The actual exhibit itself is awesome.  It’s not as crowded as everything is spaced apart pretty well.  The point of the actual exhibit is where you can go to meet those new advertisers or new networks that you found during the meet market.  It is a place of business where million dollar deals are being made.  Some booths do it better than others by creating an environment that affiliates want to be at.  Convert2Media has this down to the “T”.  They know what affiliates want. Other networks… Unfortunately don’t know what they are doing.

I’ve been apart of exhibits at convention centers for YEARS.  From the time I was a little kid I remember my mom taking me to the PDX Convention Center to help her in a booth at the craft shows.  Granted a craft show is different then an affiliate show the same concept of “GET PEOPLE TO YOUR BOOTH” still applies. If a booth has people sticking around then they know whats up.  Next time you are at a convention take a good look at who is in the booth and who isn’t.  Walk down the isles and take a peak at which booth has a bunch of people around it.  You can almost look at networks and their booths are your affiliate landing page.  Which network gets it?  Which network is getting the traffic and which is getting the conversions? eh… It’s a silly analogy but it makes sense to me…

If you want to learn you can definitely learn a lot by going to one of these events.  There are plenty of speakers just make sure you get the right pass so that you can sit in on a session.  Who knows, maybe one day I’ll get up and talk about PPV advertising.  I don’t go to the sessions though so I wouldn’t be able to tell you which ones are good to sit in on. Just don’t go to a session that you don’t feel would apply to what you are trying to accomplish… Common sense but it had to be said.

My wife came with me to this event and I was excited to show her around and introduce her to many people that she has said “Hi” to over skype. We arrived on Friday morning and just putzed around Vegas.  We caught a show and really just had a good time before ASW on Sunday.  Unfortunately for her she dislocated her shoulder on Saturday.  She’s dislocated her shoulder before but this time she couldn’t get it back in.  I was freaking out.  I know what it feels like to have your arm pop out and just dangle there.  Anyways… We got her to the hospital and they got her all fixed up :)

On Sunday I went to the meet market (By myself cause my wife was hurting)… You already heard about the joy that was so I’ll skip those details. I met up with Ian Fernando and Benny Tejeda.  Were were standing around trying to figure out what to eat when Naomi from Bloosky showed up.  So naturally we convinced her that it would be a good idea to have Bloosky take us out to lunch.  We went on a hunt though.  Apparently everywhere in Vegas closes early on Sundays.  Eventually we found a pretty good sushi bar called Sushi Roku.  It was pretty good and I thank Bloosky for the good food.

Later on that night I headed over to CraftSteak for the Ianteract dinner with Elite Clicks Media.  That was some GOOOOOOD food.  Steak, chicken, salad, and a bunch of other good food.  It was a feast and I thank Ian for having that dinner and ECM for sponsoring it. While at the dinner I sat at the ballers table.  There was Jonathan Volk and his wife (Sorry Maria… Next time my wife will come I promise…), Brandon Hoffman (AdHustler), Ian Fernando, Matt Wasserman, and Logan Thompson. Behind me was Andrew Wee, Kyle Hannah, and some other guy… Across the room was the ECM crew and a couple of their affiliates.

After the dinner I headed over to the PPC.BZ/Nickycakes party.  From there Matt Wasserman and I left to head over to the Karaktr Media party. Hung out there for a few minutes and then Matt and I left back to the PPC.BZ party.  Once that party was done I headed back home.  I was tired…

Monday was a good day.  I woke up late, got to the show late and basically walked to a couple of booths to discuss some business. Stopped by C2M, Clickbooth, MundoMedia, and a few other booths.  Also had a little chat with Ryan Eagle. Around 3:30ish I had a meeting with Adperio and Experian in one of the suits. That went pretty well.  When I left that I just headed home.  Talked with my wife for a bit (She was still hurting so she hung out at the condo), ordered some Chinese food, then headed back out for some more parties.  One of the biggest things that you have to realize is that networking is the best thing you can do for your business.  That’s the only reason why I go to the parties. Networking is key to the success of my business.

Anyways, the evening started out with the Meetup202 event at the Palms. Wes Mahler (Founder of T202) and the owners of Bloosky spoke about the T202/Bloosky merger. At the end several meetup202 organizers gave out tips.  Wes asked me if I would give a tip but I said no.  I wasn’t sure I was going to go to the event because the poor wife was still hurting. Ian’s tip was pretty good.  He gave a tip on PPV. Some weirdy named Ryan basically said to be compliant or die and another guy just started whoring out his product.  Jasper also got up and spoke about … well I honestly don’t know… some lady was sitting next to me and wouldn’t stop talking…

After that event Ian and I headed over to the Mundo Media party. It was good times there.  I finally got to meet Yousif the owner of Profit Kings Media. He wasn’t anything like I expected.  But that’s what happens when you work with people online… You just never know what they are like in person. Todd my business partner also joined me at this point.  From the Mundo Media party we headed over to the CX Digital party in the same tower at the Palms.  That was a pretty decent party.  Hung out a little with Emil from PPC Bully. Emil is a pretty crazy guy… but he is definitely good people.  Also saw Igal Pines there.  He is like the Shoemoney of Israel. I’ve met him at a few events before but never really had the opportunity to talk with him.  Anyways… After the Mundo party Ian, Todd, and I headed over to the Clickbooth Hangover suit party.  That was in a completely different casino so we made our way over there.  Took a bit of time but it was a good trip.  Saw Nick Throlson there and I swung my arm around his shoulder and asked him straight up… I said “Nick… tell me the truth… Do you actually make money online or do you just whore your affiliate link to everyone?” And he told me “I make my money from referrals”.  Had to do the same thing to Murray Newlands as he was at the party as well.  He admitted it.  I just wish I had my video camera. No wonder networks like MarketLeverage and Clickbooth want their nuts so bad. Oh well it’s decent money and I’m not going to knock them for doing it.

Around 3 am Todd and I left the Clickbooth party to go play some Craps.  We meet up with a couple of AMs from Epicenter.  We played till about 4:30 and honestly we all walked away with some money which is always nice.

So… That was my adventure at ASW.  I know I am missing the last day… but that is because I didn’t go.  I told my wife I would spend the day with her and that is what I did.

Honestly I think these types of events are something that you should experience.  Some people say that they don’t want to go because they don’t do that well online… WHO CARES!  The point is to go and network with people that can help your business. I challenge you to go to the next Affiliate Summit event. I promise you won’t regret it.

Below is an image of our overall site flow.

Here are the steps to our site.

1. Receive an opt-in for a free ebook or a free course.
2. Upsell to a paid course or package – After they optin in they will be redirected to the offer AND the free auto responder series will direct them to the offer.
3. Move them over to a buyers list.  Once the person has completed their purchase through us we can move them over to a buyers list.  This will be a more active list and will be more profitable for us.  Our end goal is to move people over to our buyers.

The free auto responder series will have several emails that cover basic advice for our niche of choice.  At the end of about 7 emails we’ll give one last hard push to buy the product and if they don’t… we’ll then chances are they aren’t going to pick anything up from us.  But they are still good to have on a mailing list so that we can try and market other products to them.

Once they opt-in they will be directed to the actual product page.  Then there is a series of upsells and downsells until we finally reach the download page.  However, before they can download we need them to opt-in to another list.  This will remove them from the freebie list and over to a buyers list.  These are our golden boys.  They have purchased once from us and chances are we can get them to purchase something again.

That’s the overall flow of the site. Next week I’ll be in Vegas for Affiliate Summit West 2010.  I’ll try my hardest to get a post out on Tuesday but if it doesn’t get out I’ll get one to you on Thursday for sure. The Dog training niche has been used extensively by all case studies i have seen and reports, ebooks, etc… It is like the only non-im niche all IM marketers are able to explain.
I think it would be more useful if you chose something else.

This is quite a good point. But let me explain why. It has everything to do with the ease of the market. The dog training niche is what we call an evergreen niche. Meaning you can make money in the niche all year long. Why? Because people don’t stop buying dogs. Golf on the other hand (My new niche choice) is down right now and about to hit an upswing as we get into spring.

That image is the basic graph of all keywords relating to golf. If you notice, at the beginning of the year is the low point. Then throughout the year there is an upswing. This will be good for this case study/series as I start off slow and build the momentum.

About halfway through the year you’ll notice from that graph that there is a sharp decline in searches. I don’t golf so I don’t know what big turn happens around July. I can only make a guess.

You’re more than welcome to follow along in this niche with me. However, it would be nice if you picked your own niche to jump into. I definitely understand. But please respect the fact that I am going to try and make this niche profitable. I only give you the URL so you can see what I am doing with the website as I move along.

Here are some basic things that we will need with this project of ours.

1. A domain name with the main keyword in the url. I use namecheap for the free whois guard. ($9.96)
2. A hosting package.  I use a company called webhostforseo.com. Don’t mind the look of the site… I use them because I can get my IPs cheap and each IP I receive comes to me from a different C-Class.  I’ll cover good hosting in another post. When we get into solid SEO for this series you’ll want one of the servers they have.  But for now you can use a basic hostgator account ($4.95/month)
3. An auto responder account ( I use aweber) ($19.95/month)
4. A good PLR product that we can dissect and part out.  Most PLR products come with websites and other goodies.  I’m a member of a PLR Club so I have access to HUNDREDS of PLR articles, websites, software, etc.  ($47/month) or ($15 one PLR article/site)

That’s all we are going to need to start out.  Our total month to month cost is very cheap.  Below $50.  If you can’t swing that then get out of here. I’ll dive more into each of those 4 things we need to get this rolling as we move along.

We’ll build out a complete site and then begin marketing to free sources. While our money is building up for the free sources we will open the doors to PPC advertising, move over to some banners/media buys, and then PPV advertising. Don’t forget the SEO that we will be receiving as well.

So I guess to start out we will need to pick a niche to jump into. I recommend that you watch the 40 minute video on niche research that I set up a few months back.

For the case of this series I am going to use dog training as the niche of choice. So before I jump into anything serious I need to so some research on the niche. What kind of products are out there and what kind of search volume is this getting?

Unfortunately for us Google has removed the sponsored links search so it might be a little more difficult to see what your competition is doing. You can always use the Google external keyword tool to gauge the competition. Make sure you do a good amount of surfing the web to see what kind of product competition there will be for your niche.

Once you have a good understanding of the competition you can begin your plan of attack. So for now I am going to surf some sites and I’ll get back to you in my next post with where I searched and what I found. Till then why don’t you watch that video on niche research and begin to pick a niche. Remember… You can make any niche profitable… It’s just a matter of how you attack it.

While everyone is giving you BS posts on PPV marketing I’ll be taking you down a real road for profit! Let me explain some things first.  I’ve been making a full time income from PPV for quite a while. If you have questions on PPV feel free to post them in the members forum.  I’m not saying that you shouldn’t try PPV I’m just saying there are other more profitable ways to generate money.  Unfortunately not everything you do with PPV will make you rich.  Don’t buy into the hype of it all.

Over the next few weeks I’m going to cover a method for making money online that you can use for ANY niche! Best of all it is GUARANTEED to make you money. How many people can GUARANTEE you that you will make money.  I’ll tell you what… If you follow this course and can’t make money after putting in some honest effort then I will pay back any and all expenses that you incur (just make sure to document everything that you do)

This method isn’t a one hit wonder that will die out in 2 weeks so you have to pump it back up and start all over again.  I’m going to show you how to build a profitable online business.

I once paid $5,000 for what I’m about to teach you. So why am I going to give this away?  Let’s just say that I am tired of all the bullshit that goes around online.  I’m tired of people saying “HEY YOU CAN MAKE $14,597 A DAY WITH PPC”.  While it may be true… You won’t start out making that much money.  And most of the time the courses are full of holes.

I said it before and I’m going to say it again so you fully understand what I’m doing here…  I’m going to walk you through step by step what I have done to build a huge online business that has allowed me to work from home.  I’m not just going to cover PPC, PPV, SEO, Media Buys, but other forms of marketing.  Plus I’m going to show you how to set it up from the beginning so that you can capture emails and market to a group of people over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over… Okay you get the point… and over again.

This is for the beginner.  This is for the person that isn’t making money right now… This is also for the person who wants a more stable online income something that isn’t going to die away once the FTC says something…  This is for YOU. I’m going to start out slow with the most least amount of expenses possible.  But as we move along with the series we will be opening the doors to some more costs as we grow.  Don’t worry.  You don’t have to spend money until your ready to.  No need to buy into PPC until you are ready!

1. I have purchased HUNDREDS of domains with the hopes of eventually putting something on them. I literally spent over 5k in URLs alone.  That’s a substantial amount of money just sitting there. So in 2010 I will not be renewing the majority of the URLs.  In fact for the domains that have nothing on them I will be setting up my own version of a parked domain and then selling them off to private buyers and domain auction sites. In the end I’ll be keeping about 23 domains… No more domain buying sprees for me.
2. I need to blog more… What more can be said.  I blogged a total of 65 times in 2009.  That comes out to just over one post a week.  That’s not enough if I want to make the blog bigger and better. So to start out I am going to blog two times a week.  I’m going to try and get blog posts out on Tuesday and Thursday of every week. Some weeks will be more.  By the end of the year I want to be blogging four times a week.
3. No new businesses.  I currently am a “Managing Member” of 5 LLCs plus I have 3 partnership agreements out there.  It is time for me to focus on the 3 businesses that are generating money right now.  2010 for me is all about cutting the dead weight out of my businesses. I can’t jump on every opportunity I see anymore.  It’s time to take a better approach to things.  Focus is the key here.
4. I’m going to build my “Internet Marketing” mailing list.  I have mailing lists for other niches but the one I currently have for IM is quite small comparatively.  I learned a lot from the MassPPVTraffic launch and because of it I decided that my IM list HAS to grow… No choices about it. This means that some things on the blog are going to change.
5. 2009 for me had no structure.  I was all over the place in terms of when I would work.  In 2010 I will be focusing more on a working schedule.  My poor wife almost never got to spend time with me.  But things will change in 2010.  I look forward to setting working hours as well as using better time management in what I currently do.  I (like most) spend way too much time surfing the Internet. To help me in this effort I will be moving into an office as soon as possible.  In fact I am going to look at office spaces in the morning. Also, my working hours will most likely be set at 9-5.  I know that the occasion will arise where I need to be on after my set hours and that is ok… As long as it isn’t every day.

Hmmm…. Focus… That sounds like an excellent goal for 2010… I am going to Focus more.
