In the past I have marketed on mobile networks such as Admob, Inmobi, and Mojiva.  I knew for a fact that Admob offered a “click-to-call” function for their mobile advertisers (so does Inmobi, don’t know about Mojiva) so I chose to try out their traffic.  Basically what happens is when someone clicks on your advertisement they are shown a message that states “Are you sure you want to call XXXXXXXXXX” Then the person clicks call or cancel.  Now, the theory behind this is that if someone clicks the call button then they genuinely want to call your company.  At least that was my thought on this process.

Here was the first banner creative

This was the first creative that was used.  This was a text version of an Admob ad.  Originally the ad just said “Free Debt Elimination Kit – Call Now!”.  However, we noticed a terrible CTR for the offer.  Because we were sending traffic after business hours we assumed that people just weren’t clicking.  Most people know that if you call after business hours you will have to deal with an automated system instead of an actual phone operator. So to combat the issue we put on Call 24/7 to the ad to help ease people’s minds. 21k impressions, 130 clicks, 6 confirmed calls, $48.xx spend, average $0.30 a click. Not the best… so we moved to a banner ad approach so we could add more info to the creative.

Here was the second/final creative

This was an actual image instead of using the Admob default background and custom text.  Image ads on mobile networks allow you to add more content to the actual creative.  You can also see that we were pre-qualifying people by letting them know that if they click they will need to continue with a phone call to us. The creative also let the surfer know what they would be receiving for calling in.   1,316,753 impressions, 9,871 clicks, $1,353.50 spend (about $0.14 a click)… you ready for this?… 410 calls.  That’s $4,100.  AWESOME RIGHT?  Well… yes and no… The advertiser wasn’t too thrilled about the quality of traffic… Don’t worry… they’re going to pay up… but…

Here is what I learned

Mid day we received a report of the traffic quality.  Unfortunately it was quite low. And here’s why…

Any good marketer knows that they should always track their stats with a third party company. For this project I chose to go with Dynamicic.com (a phone number tracking service). Dynamicic also offers the option to record the phone call so that you can hear what exactly is going on. Out of my own curiousness for how the calls went I made sure to turn on the recording function from the beginning.  After we received the report from the advertiser I went back and listened to about 50 phone calls.  While some of them were indeed real people the majority were remnant noises of little kids… WHAT?  Yeah… little tykes making their little googoo gaga sounds.

So… While I did make a HUGE return for the investment, the quality of the actual phone call was utter $#!^ to say the least.  This venture in mobile marketing taught me that 85%+ clicks on the advertisement come from kids that are playing with their parents phone.  Now… Normally this wouldn’t be an issue but when you have an advertiser that is paying you for a phone call of ANY length then this is a critical matter that needs to be resolved.

That traffic was ran on Friday.  Right now the campaign is paused until I can get a full report as to the quality of the leads. If it’s extremely bad I’ll just ask for a pay decrease and hope that I can keep pushing traffic.  Even at a couple dollars a lead I’ll still be making oodles of dinero from this campaign.

So… T3Leads has asked me to give them another review… So here I am… Just so we’re clean, I did get paid for this review.

What’s changed?

For starters, the T3Leads website has a brand new look. Unfortunately, the website now looks like a low end gentlemen’s club… Black and Gold. But that’s okay because their member’s area is a nice crisp white. T3 is currently on the 3rd generation of their backend tracking platform. Dirty on the outside, clean on the inside. A little deceptive if you ask me… but that’s not the point of the network.

The real change has come from how T3Leads now supplies their payout to affiliate. Previously your leads were valued based on a bid method sort of like an “auction” for your data. Now T3 does a straight sale depending on the data that is given as well as the exact niche the lead is for.

Payouts range from $1.50 on the low end and go all the way up to $100 for a payday loan offer

Reporting for T3 hasn’t changed much. Just the look really. They’ve upgraded to better looking graphs and a cleaner navigation through the reports. You can also see a report for leads that errored on conversion. And of course there are the standard filters for on date ranges, product, channel type, etc. I happen to like the fact that I can see my stats for Today, Yesterday, last Week, previous Week, Last month, and Current Balance all in the header from any page in their system. This saves me time when I just want a quick look at how my conversions went.

Ahh I can also see when my next check is going to be sent from any page. This helps me with budgeting out my campaigns. And as always, T3leads pays out twice a month with a minimum payment of $100. Of course if you generate more than $1000 in a week, you can always receive faster payment terms.

What makes them different from the rest?

Easy answer really. Because T3 is not your average affiliate network, they provide you with two… umm… creative options. The first is called a “Public Website” this is their generic webpage that everyone has access to. This allows you to promote to something that already has branding. Your Affilite ID is carried through the URL and you will be credited accordingly for your lead.

The second method of promotion that they offer is called a “Private Website”. This is by far the coolest function of T3Leads because they are essentially allowing you to white label their form onto your website. That means that you have 100% control over the look and feel of the landing page. You can create a whole site based around funneling people into the form or you can do a one page lander to get people to sign up. The integration is super easy and their customization functions to get the form to blend in with your site is absolutely a life saver.

Just a little more information

T3Leads.com has gone a long way to set themselves up as a special niche specific network. By focusing on financial leads they can gather the best financial advertisers and hook them up with the best financial affiliate.

Saturday 14th

Arrived in NY around 2:30.  I was exhausted so I caught a cab to the hotel and crashed for a couple of hours.

Benny Tejeda was staying in the hotel with me so I called him up to let him know I was in the room.  He was mid transit to the hotel.

Benny ended up meeting up with me at Rue 57 with Brian (Winley) and his business partner AJ.  Brian I’ve known since December and has really taken off in his affiliate marketing.

At some point I met up with my buddies Ian Fernando and AdHustler.  We ended up heading on over to “Faces and Names”.  Somewhere along our little 2 block march we ran into some kid that… well… seemed to want to argue the whole night…Anyways, at some point, NickyCakes met up with us at “Faces and Names” and well… We took a picture for my mom.

Yeah… That’s for you mom… For some reason… My mom has an obsession with Nicky.  So when I saw him I had to get a picture with him… And boy does she love it. Here’s her comments left on the pic in Nicky’s Facebook account (Yes… They are FB friends…)

AdHustler hit that one on the head “This is getting weird”.

After we left “Faces and Names” we meet up with Jason Rubacky and did a little more… Hanging out :)

Sunday 15th

Benny and I headed to breakfast/lunch around 11:30.  The restaurant in the hotel has some decent food… But for a $20 meal I would rather eat street meat (Food vendors on the corners of Manhattan streets).

After breakfast we headed over to the “Meet Market”.  If you aren’t familiar with the Affiliate Summit, the meet market is the perfect opportunity to walk around, see who will be exhibiting, and to make brief connections with people that you plan on meeting with during the week. During the meet market I bumped into several affiliate that I have known online for months online, but never had the opportunity to meet them in person.

Lunch came courtesy of Eric at ClickBooth!  Thank you Eric :) There we talked about none other than… Well… I don’t remember… It was sports at one point…

The meetup202 group in NY had a get together. Lot’s of good contacts there.  John Hasson, his wife, and I talked about Mormons, milk, sprite with lime, and missions to South America.

After the Meetup202 event it was time to eat so Ian, Brandon and I headed over to Capital Grille for Ian Fernando’s famous “Affiliate Dinner”.  Other notable names include Morgan Thomas aka HeavyT (creator of 2 girls 1 cup!), Ryan Gray (Super Affiliate Twins), Brian (DailyConversions.com), Mike Chiasson, Wes Mahler (Creator Tracking202), Brandon Hoffman (AdHustler), Bryn Youngblunt, Ian Fernando (of course… it’s his dinner), Matt Wasserman, and the crew of Kitara Media (Sponsors for the dinner).

Dinner was good.  Probably the best I’ve had in all of my Affiliate Summits.

After dinner we hit up a rooftop party… Don’t remember who sponsored it.  But met up with some really good people.

The night was still young…   This was NY of course.  So… We headed out to where the Elite Clicks Media crew was…  Their hotel :) There we hung out, talked marketing, and well… had an overall good time. I got to hang out with some good friends that I’ve known for a long time and I even got to meet some new people. NJ, Steve Howe, Thy, Justin, Greg and Kim Davis, Tyler,  Ryan Machara, Raphaela Bazalgette, Luke Samples, Ricco, Jon Fisher, Nicky Papers and well… too many to name. At some point in the evening the hotel security came up and kicked us out… So we went to none other than… “Faces and Names”.

Do you see that guy in that last pick on the far left?  He’s some random french dude.  No one could figure out who he was and how he got there.

Anyways, I could be missing some details in there… but you get the jist of what happened.

Monday 16th

FOOD… When you go to these events and you stay up till 4:30 in the morning you tend to sleep for a LONG time.  Man was I starving by the time I woke up.  Luckily for me so was the Elite Clicks Media team and Ian Fernando. We… it was time to head over to Old Castle and grab some food.

Our service was terrible.  The poor waiter knew it too.  It was so bad we had to call the front desk to send reinforcements.  But in the end we ate, talked, and left full.

When we got done eating I had a couple of meetings with AMs.  I walked around the show for a little bit to catch other people I knew.  Stopped for about 30 minutes and talked with my good friend Ruck (Owner Convert2Media).  It was nice catching up with him after these last few months.  I also met up with Ryan Eagle (Owner EWA Private Network) for a few minutes and had a chat at some point (might have been during the meet market).

Later that day I was conducting a round table on PPV advertising.  It went pretty well. People were crowding all around just to hear a couple things about PPV advertising.  It was a lot of fun though.  There were networks, affiliates, and merchants all sitting in to listen to some PPV tricks of the trade. The only problem I had was that I was still tired… and my voice was almost gone.  I was going to record it but my flip mino was dead when I got down to the round table.

After the round table I went to grab some food.  Wish I could remember where.  Probably street meat.  Headed over to Morgan’s affiliate get together. Then the NeverBlueAds party (weak…), then took a cab across Manhattan to the ClickBooth party. Met up with Brian (Winley) and well… Had a good time.  Street meat, parties, all the fun stuff.

Tuesday 17th

Woke up hungry again… Called around to see what everyone was doing.  Finally got a hold of Brian (Winley) and his partner AJ. We headed over to Old Castle to grab a bit to eat and talk business.  We had some really good conversations.  I was explaining to Brian and AJ the best way that I have found to deliver email without using a third party autoresponder. It was a very good productive conversation.

After lunch, I headed back to the conference, hung out in the press room to get some work done (way behind) and then… headed home

Overall… ASE 10′ was a huge success.  I made plenty of new connections to help my business grow and I cultivated connections that I have made in the past.  These event’s aren’t necessarily just a place to learn… These events are essential to your networking in this business.  It’s not about what you know.  It’s all about who you know.  AND… Who you can leverage or who can leverage you.

Now.  Many of you have sent me emails asking me what I have been doing for the last 2 months… And I’ve been getting alot of questions about the case study… Well… We’ve had 15 conversions… That means we’ve generated a total of $15×27 = $405.  On average we have generated just about 30 visitors a day from free online marketing methods.

So… What has caused me to stop blogging about it?  Well the main reason is that the site has been copied several times.  The copying has been soooooo bad that even the analytics have been transferred over to the doppelgangers. Unfortunately I can’t give an accurate representation of traffic statistics.  But… 15 sales off of 100% free traffic is better than nothing right?

So, where do we go from here?  Unfortunately I will not be continuing the case study. That should be apparent from my 2 months absence.  If I was to move into PPC on the case study then someone will copy the campaign.  Of I was to move into PPV then someone would copy the campaign… Some people have just ruined it for the rest of us…

Anyways, these last couple months I’ve been pretty busy with my coder while all of this has been going down.  We’ve been hard work tweaking a piece of software that we use on a daily basis.  I won’t go into too much detail about it. So… I hope now that I have a little bit of time I can start blogging with you about some extreme tactics that I have been using online.

Anyways, I won’t take up too much more of your fathers day.  To those of you that ARE fathers…I hope you have a great day today! Remember… All that we do online is not for US but is for our FAMILIES.

When writing your articles the common misconception is that they must be very informative and based solely on your specific niche. While the majority of articles you submit should follow protocol, don’t be afraid to throw in some fun and interesting articles that will grab the readers attention.

Also, if you have dipped your hand in this type of traffic generation method before, you know that MANY of the articles out there are low-quality dime-a-dozen type articles. It may seem like the more the better, but that does not mean you can not write rich, interesting, and exciting articles. If you want people to read them and come to your site. Take some time and write well.

Now, there are several places where you can post your articles, but I personally recommend article directories above all else. Article directories are places where you can get your articles published quickly and easily for free.

You can submit your articles to dozens of different directories,  but here is a list of directories I think you should start at:

www.GoArticles.com
www.Articlecity.com
www.Isnare.com
www.Amazines.com
www.ApprovedArticles.com
www.SubmitYourArticle.com
www.Articlesbase.com

These directories will allow you to publish your articles and post a one-way link back to your website. Before creating your link, think about what page you want to send traffic to. For example, do you want to send your readers directly to your sales page? Or do you want to send them to a page with more information to warm them up a bit. This all depends on your product, and should be split tested to see what converts the best.

So there you have it. Just a simple breakdown of Article submissions. With some intellect and moderate writing skills this can and will generate free traffic to your website.

Kris – One of the great things about article submissions is that people will often scrap your article to fill in content on their website. This will place a link on their site back to yours… 1 article submitted to an article directory can turn into a handful of inbound links to your site!

The simplest way of doing this is using Facebook and Myspace.

MySpace is a great medium because it is full of younger adults who are eager to become an adult; whereas, Facebook is full of adults who are employed and generally have a college education. You should know your demographic and choose accordingly.

The first step of joining either of these communities is to create an account. The process is simple and takes less than 2 minutes. Once you have created your account, you can access the creation page, where you can begin to promote yourself and your business on your profile.

For now, let’s skip right to searching for other people’s blogs and commenting on those blogs. I will give you a breakdown on how to do this.

The first step is to search for the different blogs about your business. We will use “surfing” as our example topic.

1. Start by going to http://blog.myspace.com. You should see the following page:

   

   MySpace’s blog search page. From here, you can locate all MySpace blogs through searches.

2. Search for your niche topic. In the case of my example, I have entered the word “surfing” and then searched for it. MySpace’s engine returned 13,400 results:

3. Move from blog-to-blog until you find one that both receives traffic and is relevant to your particular niche, as well as your goals. In my case, I found a surfing blog that may be worth commenting on occasionally:

   

4. Select a blog to comment on.(Some bloggers require you to be there friend before you can comment). If necessary, become the blogger’s friend by sending a friend request.Once they have accepted your friend request, you can begin to comment on their blog.
5. Be sure and compose a constructive comment that is useful to the blogger and its readers. Under your comment be sure and include a link to your site. (This step is VERY important, as it would be a waste of time if you do not drive traffic back to you).

This is a great method for pointing one way links towards your site and can drive a large number of visitors to your site. Additionally, it has the potential to increase your site’s SERP. This process should be done regularly as it keeps you involved in your niches community. It may be faster and simpler to have the comments written elsewhere, like on Word, and then simply copy and paste them onto the blog page.

In addition to MySpace and Facebook blogs, you can find places to leave comments in Technorati and Yahoo! Blog Directory, you should also consider checking out the various blogs on http://www.squidoo.com and http://hubpages.com/.

There has been very little traffic to the site other than what has come in from Cashtactics.net.  This is because nothing has been done by these guys that I was trying to help.  So… I’m going to put my personal assistant Randy on the free traffic patrol for this project.  Everyday he is going to spend about 2 hours working on free traffic for the site.

I am also going to put him on blogging duty for a bit.  He will be jumping on here and giving some free traffic secrets for those that want to learn.

NOW… I know it is showing decent traffic… 50% is coming from cashtactics.net and about 45% is coming from some douche that copied the site.  They never switched out the google analytics code…

Anyways, Randy will have a post to you tomorrow morning or tonight.  He will also be loading up several posts in there ahead of time and I’m going to make sure you get at least two new free traffic sources a week until he is done.
