The Affiliate Summit conferences in general are very good.  I enjoy them and I will continue to attend them.  BUT… I honestly do not like going to the main event.  The summit is way too crowded.  It’s hard to walk around the meet market. I walked in… Tried to get to the back of the room… Got half way and turned around.  It wouldn’t be so bad if the tables were just a little bit farther apart.  The problem arises when you have 10 affiliates (for example) trying to stand in front of one table. You can imagine the congestion that arises. I think the problem with the meet market could have been alleviated if there were multiple entrances to the event.  I think affiliates need to also realize that the meet market is where you go to meet new contacts that you can go back to during the actual event. It’s called a MEET MARKET.  Not a STOP AND DO BUSINESS RIGHT THEN AND THERE MARKET.  Okay… So I might be blowing this out of proportion.  But seriously the meet market is way crowded and way hot on the inside.

The actual exhibit itself is awesome.  It’s not as crowded as everything is spaced apart pretty well.  The point of the actual exhibit is where you can go to meet those new advertisers or new networks that you found during the meet market.  It is a place of business where million dollar deals are being made.  Some booths do it better than others by creating an environment that affiliates want to be at.  Convert2Media has this down to the “T”.  They know what affiliates want. Other networks… Unfortunately don’t know what they are doing.

I’ve been apart of exhibits at convention centers for YEARS.  From the time I was a little kid I remember my mom taking me to the PDX Convention Center to help her in a booth at the craft shows.  Granted a craft show is different then an affiliate show the same concept of “GET PEOPLE TO YOUR BOOTH” still applies. If a booth has people sticking around then they know whats up.  Next time you are at a convention take a good look at who is in the booth and who isn’t.  Walk down the isles and take a peak at which booth has a bunch of people around it.  You can almost look at networks and their booths are your affiliate landing page.  Which network gets it?  Which network is getting the traffic and which is getting the conversions? eh… It’s a silly analogy but it makes sense to me…

If you want to learn you can definitely learn a lot by going to one of these events.  There are plenty of speakers just make sure you get the right pass so that you can sit in on a session.  Who knows, maybe one day I’ll get up and talk about PPV advertising.  I don’t go to the sessions though so I wouldn’t be able to tell you which ones are good to sit in on. Just don’t go to a session that you don’t feel would apply to what you are trying to accomplish… Common sense but it had to be said.

My wife came with me to this event and I was excited to show her around and introduce her to many people that she has said “Hi” to over skype. We arrived on Friday morning and just putzed around Vegas.  We caught a show and really just had a good time before ASW on Sunday.  Unfortunately for her she dislocated her shoulder on Saturday.  She’s dislocated her shoulder before but this time she couldn’t get it back in.  I was freaking out.  I know what it feels like to have your arm pop out and just dangle there.  Anyways… We got her to the hospital and they got her all fixed up :)

On Sunday I went to the meet market (By myself cause my wife was hurting)… You already heard about the joy that was so I’ll skip those details. I met up with Ian Fernando and Benny Tejeda.  Were were standing around trying to figure out what to eat when Naomi from Bloosky showed up.  So naturally we convinced her that it would be a good idea to have Bloosky take us out to lunch.  We went on a hunt though.  Apparently everywhere in Vegas closes early on Sundays.  Eventually we found a pretty good sushi bar called Sushi Roku.  It was pretty good and I thank Bloosky for the good food.

Later on that night I headed over to CraftSteak for the Ianteract dinner with Elite Clicks Media.  That was some GOOOOOOD food.  Steak, chicken, salad, and a bunch of other good food.  It was a feast and I thank Ian for having that dinner and ECM for sponsoring it. While at the dinner I sat at the ballers table.  There was Jonathan Volk and his wife (Sorry Maria… Next time my wife will come I promise…), Brandon Hoffman (AdHustler), Ian Fernando, Matt Wasserman, and Logan Thompson. Behind me was Andrew Wee, Kyle Hannah, and some other guy… Across the room was the ECM crew and a couple of their affiliates.

After the dinner I headed over to the PPC.BZ/Nickycakes party.  From there Matt Wasserman and I left to head over to the Karaktr Media party. Hung out there for a few minutes and then Matt and I left back to the PPC.BZ party.  Once that party was done I headed back home.  I was tired…

Monday was a good day.  I woke up late, got to the show late and basically walked to a couple of booths to discuss some business. Stopped by C2M, Clickbooth, MundoMedia, and a few other booths.  Also had a little chat with Ryan Eagle. Around 3:30ish I had a meeting with Adperio and Experian in one of the suits. That went pretty well.  When I left that I just headed home.  Talked with my wife for a bit (She was still hurting so she hung out at the condo), ordered some Chinese food, then headed back out for some more parties.  One of the biggest things that you have to realize is that networking is the best thing you can do for your business.  That’s the only reason why I go to the parties. Networking is key to the success of my business.

Anyways, the evening started out with the Meetup202 event at the Palms. Wes Mahler (Founder of T202) and the owners of Bloosky spoke about the T202/Bloosky merger. At the end several meetup202 organizers gave out tips.  Wes asked me if I would give a tip but I said no.  I wasn’t sure I was going to go to the event because the poor wife was still hurting. Ian’s tip was pretty good.  He gave a tip on PPV. Some weirdy named Ryan basically said to be compliant or die and another guy just started whoring out his product.  Jasper also got up and spoke about … well I honestly don’t know… some lady was sitting next to me and wouldn’t stop talking…

After that event Ian and I headed over to the Mundo Media party. It was good times there.  I finally got to meet Yousif the owner of Profit Kings Media. He wasn’t anything like I expected.  But that’s what happens when you work with people online… You just never know what they are like in person. Todd my business partner also joined me at this point.  From the Mundo Media party we headed over to the CX Digital party in the same tower at the Palms.  That was a pretty decent party.  Hung out a little with Emil from PPC Bully. Emil is a pretty crazy guy… but he is definitely good people.  Also saw Igal Pines there.  He is like the Shoemoney of Israel. I’ve met him at a few events before but never really had the opportunity to talk with him.  Anyways… After the Mundo party Ian, Todd, and I headed over to the Clickbooth Hangover suit party.  That was in a completely different casino so we made our way over there.  Took a bit of time but it was a good trip.  Saw Nick Throlson there and I swung my arm around his shoulder and asked him straight up… I said “Nick… tell me the truth… Do you actually make money online or do you just whore your affiliate link to everyone?” And he told me “I make my money from referrals”.  Had to do the same thing to Murray Newlands as he was at the party as well.  He admitted it.  I just wish I had my video camera. No wonder networks like MarketLeverage and Clickbooth want their nuts so bad. Oh well it’s decent money and I’m not going to knock them for doing it.

Around 3 am Todd and I left the Clickbooth party to go play some Craps.  We meet up with a couple of AMs from Epicenter.  We played till about 4:30 and honestly we all walked away with some money which is always nice.

So… That was my adventure at ASW.  I know I am missing the last day… but that is because I didn’t go.  I told my wife I would spend the day with her and that is what I did.

Honestly I think these types of events are something that you should experience.  Some people say that they don’t want to go because they don’t do that well online… WHO CARES!  The point is to go and network with people that can help your business. I challenge you to go to the next Affiliate Summit event. I promise you won’t regret it.

Not long ago “Traditional Advertising Agencies” ruled the advertising landscape. Companies would hire these traditional agencies as their “agencies of record” and the agency would put together their media plans, do their creative work and negotiate their media buys. Advertising agencies would do all of this for a 15% commission of the monthly media buys. To give you insight as to how traditional advertising agencies make money here is a little tidbit of info.

Most traditional media sources have 2 prices. The net price and the gross price. Traditional media is supposed to give advertising agencies the net price and advertisers asking for pricing directly from the media source are supposed to be given the gross price. The difference between net and gross pricing is 15% and that is the agency profit margin.

The problem with this model is that the ad agency and the advertiser do not have their interests aligned. In order for the agency to make more profit, they have to push more advertising on their client. They have to encourage the client to spend more whether or not that advertising is actually effective. If they don’t encourage their client to spend more money, they aren’t acting in their own self interest as an ad agency.

Affiliate Networks & Affiliate marketers already see the future. The reason that the model works so well and is so efficient is that everyone’s interests are aligned.

Advertisers make more money when Affiliate Networks make more money.
Affiliate Networks make more money when Affiliates make more money.
Affiliates make more money when everyone else makes more money.

No 1 party makes more money without all of the others benefiting as well. The model works because interests are aligned.

Unless the traditional advertising agency figures out a way to align their interests with their clients interests they may be a dying breed.

Why do you as an affiliate care?

Knowledge is power. Affiliates are a powerful force on the internet and many affiliates pursue other avenues of revenue. Knowing the issues plaguing the traditional advertising agency gives you the power to create websites, services and projects that align the interests of both publishers and advertisers rendering the traditional agency near obsolete.

In contrast to the 1980 version of the Guides – which allowed advertisers to describe unusual results in a testimonial as long as they included a disclaimer such as “results not typical” – the revised Guides no longer contain this safe harbor.

Also this:

both advertisers and endorsers may be liable for false or unsubstantiated claims made in an endorsement – or for failure to disclose material connections between the advertiser and endorsers.

Do we have to state that we get a commission per sale of a product?  This can be very interesting.  Will we now hear Oprah say “Acai Berry X paid me $1 Million to tell you their product ROCKS!” ???

GOOD FOR C2M. That’s business people… Get over it.

If you haven’t heard about the announcement you can see it on C2M’s forum by Clicking Here. One of the biggest complaints and concerns that people are having is in regards to the now 2% referral commission.

Previously C2M had 5% referral commission. By lowering this commission they have added a rewards program. Now this rewards program only gives back 1% of what the pub makes. So lets do the math (cause some people don’t know how to do this properly). 1% commission goes back to pub if bench marks are met. 2% goes to referrer. That leave 2% (or a little more) going into C2M.

Now, this I’m okay with. And let me tell you why. I would venture to say I am C2Ms biggest referrer. I have around 200 people signed up under me. January was a HUGE month with everyone pushing Acai Berry and starting up those Grant offers. So was I sad when C2M made this announcement? No… not really. Infact I was happy for them. You guys have to remember, this is a business. We are all here to run a business. If you base your income off of one source then you are going to be sorry when that source dries up.

Now if you base your income off of your referrals for any network then you just suck as a person. Those people are giving up 5% of their money to be signed up under you. You should be greatful that they took the time to join under you to begin with! You should be sending them a reward for the money they are earning you. Jasper from Nerdy Affiliate just got a MacBook Pro sent to him for the volume he is pushing with C2M. That was my way of saying thank you. I don’t need his commissions. I don’t need your commissions. I don’t base my Internet income on what you guys are making. That is too unreliable for me. I need to know that what I do will make me money. I can’t be worried about what you guys are doing. If I was… I would become an affiliate manager.

Now… I got asked a lot about whether or not I knew about the drop in referral commissions because the free PPC mentoring (my reward to people signed up under me) is now going to MarketLeverage instead of Convert2Media. Yes I did know about this. But that has nothing to do with why we moved to ML. We moved for the simple fact that we overloaded the C2M guys with work. They are a small team. Our choice to move to ML was based solely on the fact that we like ML and we made C2M busier than they already were. Ruck called me up and asked me flat out to back off on the referrals for a bit. That is the sole reason why we moved over. When C2M is ready I will be more than happy to move back to them on the referrals for the PPC program.

So why goto a convention? Because that is where you will find out the latest in industry news, hear about techniques you have never heard of before, and network with some of the best!

There are many speakers at conventions. You’ll learn all sorts of good stuff. Ad-Tech Miami has around 100 different speakers from different niches within the internet marketing world. Some of the more well known companies include “Fox Interactive Media”, “Yahoo”, “MSN”, “Terra”, and more!

Now Ad-Tech Miami is a conference that is more focused on the Hispanic end of marketing. Many of the speakers are from the Hispanic or Spanish division of the companies they represent. Miami was definitely a good choice for a location as Miami is definitely a hub for South America transport.

Also, don’t forget to jump into your CPA networks and look for offers to run in Spanish speaking countries. As if this was not enough the team also developed another handy tool for all of you toolbar lovers. They have created a Firefox WorldProxy202 Toolbar (<–That link is and installable .xpi file) which is as simple as downloading, installing and opening it up. Anytime you need to view a site from proxy just load the toolbar up and select the country you would like to view it from. You can read all about it here. For all the PPC Marketers in the forum this would be a great and easy tool to have. I’m not into toolbars really on my browser but I am gearing up to use the WorldProxy202 Service tomorrow.

What follows here was inspired by both sources:

Typically most of the readers of this blog are from the US. If you think we have it bad with credit crunches, mortgage markets plunging and a recession setting in you really need to start reading up on sources of information as stated above on how it’s becoming a world-wide problem. We are not the only ones facing hard times. Proof that some of the largest UK Insurance Affiliate Programs are withdrawing from Affiliate Promotion is only a small pebble being tossed into a vast ocean. I can see right now what they are trying to accomplish. By withdrawing their programs from networks or not offering them altogether to affiliates, they are restructuring their cost effectiveness in how they acquire business. More SEO and less payments to affiliates.

Just reading this information I can see an influx of debt consolidation, credit repair and financial services being a huge need. If you have been in the game awhile then you can already see this coming. As for promoting insurance in the UK, it looks to me as if you could find a UK Insurance Program, it’s a pretty good possibility you could do well.

Reaching out a bit I personally already know how profitable the UK Cash Loan and Payday industry is and I’ve probably have not even scratched the surface. Learning this type of information in International Markets helps give you the jump start before everyone starts to follow.

Affspy is still not open to public yet and is supposed to launch during the Affiliate Summit going on currently. Initially I think there are to be 100 beta testers. I signed up moments after I saw the headline from UberAffiliate’s post so hopefully I will be invited to check it out and relay what it is all about in the coming days.

OfferVault on the other hand was a service within Affiliate Radar (monthly fee). It’s now open to the public and offered as a free tool to quickly scan a bunch of the top CPA Networks to retrieve offers related to whatever you type in the search bar. I cannot stress to you enough how awesome and fast the tool is. Check them both out and let me know what you think of them.

oDesk has really been a fun read for me over the last evening. As I have started to branch out from reading the same old boring marketing forums I started to revamp my evening browsing into finding companies and other sites that, while they may not serve as a money making oriented interest to most people, I try to find the perks behind the sites that will allow people to maybe consider using them as an additional income and revenue source. I added a new category to the blog titled “Company Spotlight” that I would like to dedicate to postings like these.

What is oDesk?

Much like Get A Freelancer and Elance, oDesk serves as an innovative way to outsource web projects, hire IT freelancers, programmers, web designers and much more. However after comparing the 3 I really like the layout of oDesk. When you first outsource work it can be a daunting and nerve racking task. I know, I still remember the first time I did it. I’ve been burned on these sites before and it truly leaves a sour taste in your mouth. Beyond that negativity though I have meant some extraordinary people in the web design and programming fields.

One thing I looked for when I first landed on the site was reliability. I have not yet signed up with them as I have way too many things going on right now to even brainstorm a new idea but rest assured, I probably will in the next couple of months. Alright now for the money making aspect parts of oDesk and how it can help us as Marketers and Entrepreneurs. It looks to be a super easy signup process. You will be going there as a buyer looking to hire out some work or as a freelancer applying yourself to take on jobs.

As a potential buyer and wanting a project done you have easy navigation to see job postings, buyer feedback, skills, rates and oConomy facts (which serve as some quick statistics on the oDesk Marketplace).

On the other side of the fence we have the jobs section for freelancers looking for work:

There are hundreds of job listings. The keyword box up to the top left makes it a little easier to search specifically based on your skills and what type of job you might want to go for.

oDesk also has an active community of registered users that you can associate with. This would probably be a better source of asking direct questions about oDesk. It probably serves as a great networking spot to associate with other freelancers and/or companies related to your field.

Not your typical CashTactics post I know. However this serves as a great resource for marketers, entrepreneurs, webmasters, programmers, designers and everyone else in the web industry. It can be a legitimate opportunity for all you programmers out there trying to become marketers and it could probably help aspiring marketers who hope to one day work online full-time as another additional income source to help supplement them as they make their way.
