CS1.2 – Pay Per Click Case Study Part 2 – Keyword Research

Keyword Research Tools

Google Keyword Tool

Keyword Discovery

GTrends for Wordtracker

Another thing that I forgot to mention are the tools located inside of PPC-Coach. There are a handful of excellent keyword tools, like the keyword expander tool and more. Not to mention there is a landing page generator that is priceless. I’ll talk more about that next week. I’m sure that this keyword research video will generate some questions. I apologize for this video being a little more chopped up than the last. I had a rough night and haven’t been feeling too well today. The main points I wanted to stress when doing keyword research on a small budget are :

1. Focus on targeted, mid-level volume keywords. Some short-tails are fine but make sure you do just as much research on finding negative keywords (keywords that you know are not related to the offer) before you launch your campaign.

2. Bidding on a wide range of related keywords both in and out of this direct niche will work but it usually requires a bigger budget. The approach I am showing here is to focus on the keywords related to this specific niche, get those profitable and expand your testing from there. However, I do recommend bidding on some initial related niche keywords as well, that way you do have some width to your campaign.

3. Change your thinking to that of someone who would be searching for a product. If you were about to buy a digital camera and you already had one in mind, you’d search for: ‘canon sdxxxx review’, ‘canon sdxxxx coupons’, ‘canon sdxxxx price’, etc. You would not search for ‘canon sdxxxx photo paper’ or ‘canon warranties”. Think like a consumer who is in the buying mode, what would you search for? That’s what they will search for.

Andrew, I’m just getting into PPC / Affiliate marketing and found this site today actually. I’m watching the video and taking notes! Thank you so much for doing these videos. Truly appreciated. I will be signing up on the affiliate networks you listed in video 1: Market Leverage, Convert2Media and Hydra.

I spent a lot of time going through Clickbank and Commission Junction but they don’t have too many products that allow Google Conversion tracking code to be added. Hopefully Market Leverage, Convert2Media and Hydra do or maybe it still depends on the product.

Just came back from a job in Japan and unemployed at the moment so times are tough with the economy (every penny counts) but taking PPC very seriously and will be following your updates.

Please extend my thanks to Kris as well for this site.

Have a great weekend,

PS. What other tools are available to track the campaign if they do not allow us to place Google Adwords Conversion Tracking code on their Thank you page?

October 24, 2008

*Frank – You’re very welcome. Getting tracking setup through CJ is often times very hard and with Clickbank it just depends on the offer. The only offers worth running on Clickbank are the ‘hot’ ones and most of them offer tracking.

Convert2Media, Market Leverage and Hydra each have tons of offers and with a dedicated affiliate manager you will see a huge difference working with them. Also, about 85% of all the offers are able to have your pixel placed without a problem. There is another way of tracking as well, I will be mention that next week in one of the videos, so be on the lookout.

Don’t forget to sign up to the forum and RSS to stay up to date. More than happy to answer your questions through the forum.

Thanks for your fast response Andrew.

I’ve already signed up for both the forum and RSS feed as well.

Out of the 3 affiliate networks (Convert2Media, Market Leverage and Hydra), if you had to choose one to start which one would you suggest for a person just starting out?

Of course I will get to the other two affiliate networks but I don’t want to sign up for an account, let it sit and then be closed for non-performance.

I think it would be great if you ended up creating a checklist and those people who have signed up can provide you feedback on their progress.

At the end of the case study we should all celebrate and throw a party or something.

October 24, 2008

I would choose Convert2Media and Hydra. I recommend signing up for two, because you will be able to compare different offers, sometimes an offer expires on one network but not another or the offer on one networks is paused due to budget exceeded for the month and another network has a similar offer. That way you are able to continue profiting ;)

Throw a party eh? lol

Hi Andrew,
Looks like you know this area well.
May I ask you to give an unbiased review of PPC Bully.

You’ll find out that it beats all the tools above by far.
Thanks, Yefi

Andrew –
Do you ever promote physical/actual products or do you only do products like acai berry? So do you only promote products where people sign up and get sent something for free or do you ever do things like furniture, home products, toys etc?

October 27, 2008

*Marc – I’ve ran an assortment of offers, the acai berry is an actual product that is sent out. I do understand what you mean. The only items that I would say I’ve promoted that are similar to what you are speaking of are internet security software and home tv and internet services. I’ve never promoted furniture, toys, etc.

Wordtracker stats are taken from Dogpile as I’ve read somewhere and I dont think that Dogpile is reliable anymore!

Is there any other free tool which is better than Wordtracker that shows actual searches?

November 30, 2008

I’m using Google Keyword Tool and satisfied with it

Will take time to test the other tools you mentioned above

February 3, 2009

wow… superb video and article Andrew.i knew a couple of tools already but this definitely awesome.thanks for sharing .

I totally agree with your comments about the fact that you need to think closely about the types of searches a potential visitor would do to find your site content. In a sense you have to think like a visitor, which is not always straight forward. I have always said that website owners are more likely to be successful if they have a background in psychology rather than specific technical knowledge, because it’s all about creativity and thinking outside the box.

thank you for the free information!

Keyword research is the most critical thing on PPC and you’ve done a good job mentoring on this topic. I use keyword spy everytime before I enter to a new market and analyze competitors status and it’s a great tool.

Keyword research is really important. It is tricky too. Thanks for the video. I picked up a few tricks I had not heard yet.

August 15, 2010

Nice that you mention the importance of “buyer keywords”. It’s pretty much logical thinking, but still, many new IM’er just look at the numbers in their keyword tools.
