Like Andrew said, I’d probably put in WP Super Cache, which caches the php files to static html, significantly reduces processor load, esp for popular articles.

You only need this plugin if your blog is a popular one :)

I don’t think Askimet is a must-have plugin. WP Spam Free is more powerful!

Thanks for posting this – I’ll have to look into some of those for my site blog. I’m curious as to why you should need a special plugin to enable dofollow for comments – why doesn’t WP do this automatically?

WP is a hack magnet. If you can avoid using it, do so. And the constant upgrades are a bit annoying too.
