A Tornado Strikes 1 Mile From My House

At about 12:30 am last night I heard thunder and quickly went to Weather.com to look at the radar and what I saw coming my way was horrific. It’s been in the 60’s the last 3 days which is completely unheard of this time of year for Kansas. I figured with the cold front coming in and the south winds over the last few days we might get some hail or something, but in all actuality a tornado rolled thru about a mile north of my house last night. My windows were shaking and it was the fiercest wind ever but I didn’t know it was an actual tornado until I went for my morning drive. I could not get very close as electrical and road crews would not let me in but I managed to take a few shots and actually followed the tornado’s path for about a mile. I found an old barn that got blown down (it needed it anyway). You cannot even get out north of town unless you take a gravel road detour. Just click the thumbnails to see full view.

    This state has some of the worst storms. But when I was doing construction these storms actually made life better. I always had roofs and siding to repair.

    This tornado last night is looked upon as a bad omen. I am not a superstitious person by nature but usually a storm like this comes in the last week of April - 1st week of money.

    As mild as this winter has been and with this storm I fear it’s going to be a horrible spring and summer. This past spring we had the worst flood in twenty years. We literally could not travel west because the Neosho River came out over the road.

    Makes for good fishing though…

    I sure remember tornadoes in Nebraska where I grew up. Running down to the basement on an average of two times per week usually began in April. Our town had emergency alarms that went off during tornado alerts.

    It is early in the year for one, though.

    Crazy weather isn’t it? They mentioned Evansville, IN (Where I live) a few times on the Weather channel. We were a celebrity town :)

    Nothing happened here though. Had a few funnel clouds, alarms going off everywhere, but everything settled. Nice day today!
